Nicole reveals her biggest parenting challenges

HOLLYWOOD star Nicole Kidman admits she has a problem letting go when it comes to daughters Faith Margaret and Sunday Rose.

"I do have elements of the helicopter parent that I grapple with," she says, despite having two other children with ex-husband Tom Cruise.

"When my daughters are playing on the monkey bars I try not to hover and say 'be careful'. I want them to find their own way, but I still have that balance of knowing I am there when they need me," the Oscar winner said in the latest issue of Foxtel Magazine.

Born more than 15 years after Kidman and Cruise's daughter Isabella, the two primary schoolers are deeply attuned to their mother's moods.

"Sometimes I'm too much and that's when they go, 'Please don't burst into tears when I tell you this, mum'. So I try not to because I want them to tell me things."

Based in Nashville, Kidman will return to Australian screens this year in upcoming Foxtel series Big Little Lies, based on the book by Australian author Liane Moriarty.

Meanwhile, Kidman's Golden Globe-nominated film Lion is setting box office records.

The drama, based on the real life experiences of Tasmanian man Saroo Brierly, has posted the fifth biggest opening weekend for an Australian film of all time and the biggest ever opening weekend for an independent Australian film.

The film has also opened at number 1 at the New Zealand box office, number 4 at the UK box office and in the US has already taken $14.5m before going into wide release.
