New shops a positive sign

MAYBE it is just because Christmas hype is filling the air around Bundaberg, but the buzz over the new stores popping up throughout the city seems to be just as exciting as planning, and shopping, for the big day itself.

It is always exciting to try something new, but what has been even better is that there is a lot more new places to try.

Earlier this year, newsroom talk was often “another shop has closed”, “this shop is now gone”.

But over the last month or so, there has been a buzz “this new shop has opened”, “this new store is coming”.

The Bundaberg Chamber of Commerce and real estate agents are also seeing a change in attitudes, confidence and business, which is such a positive sign to see.

Times have been tough in 2009. It needed to be reported and it did make the front page a few times.

So we decided to treat the positive news in the same way and put it on the front as well — a place we thought it deserved to be.

Not only because it is good news for business owners, but it is a great sign for our economy and the community.

I am sure that there are still plenty of people doing it tough at the moment, but hopefully today’s story is an indication we can all look forward to a better 2010.
