Name of race is a tribute to Percy

BUNDABERG Race Club will pay tribute to one of its most loved characters by naming a race after Percy Bond today.

The Percy Bond Memorial Class 2 Handicap will be raced at 2.18pm today, in honour of the late strapper and assistant.

“It’s the first time we’ve done it,” Bundaberg Race Club president Rod Titterington said this week.

“We thought it was a nice tribute to Percy.”

Bond strapped horses for many years under trainers such as Neil Steindl at Thabeban Park racecourse.

For the past 20 years he was better known for his successful partnership with Oakwood trainer Mary Hassam.

Steindl worked closely with Hassam, training many champion horses over the past 20 years until he died last December, aged 84.

The Percy Bond Memorial race will be the second in an action-packed race day for the Bundaberg Race Club Family Fun Day.

Five races will be held throughout the day. There will also be rides for children. The first 150 children at the event will receive a free fun bag filled with toys, vouchers and food, Titterington said.

For the parents, the races will start at 1.30pm with the Ride N’ Slides Maiden Plate race.

The main race of the day, the Open Handicap, will start at 2.57pm.

The final race of the day will take place at 4.20pm.
