Motorists helped driver cross the road before fire started

SEEING a crashed car up ahead with flames bouncing off the bonnet sparked a call to action in Darren Cook.

The skilled four-wheel-driver drove off-road into the grass, around the queue of motorists waiting for the road to clear, pulled out his fire extinguisher and started dousing the flames.

The crash happened about 3.50pm at Bakers Creek, when a car ploughed through a power pole and sparked a small bush fire.

The driver was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

"I was standing there in my shorts and thongs, trying to get close enough to the fire to put (the nozzle) under the car," he said.

"I emptied my extinguisher under the car. We got the driver to the other side of the road, and then the fire started again."

He said when the powerlines came down, a car "skidded to avoid becoming a convertible" and the lines bounced up and over it, before falling to the ground once more.

"This car was playing pogo with the powerlines," he said. "It was nuts."

When another car carrying an extinguisher pulled up, Mr Cook doused the fire again until two fire crews arrived.

But unfortunately, Mr Cook's heroic acts meant he had to sacrifice his 'prized possessions'.

"My Ripcurl thongs got melted, my prized possessions," he joked.

Mr Cook said no matter if it's on road or off road, he always drove prepared.

"I've always got a first aid kit, extinguisher, glass breaker and seat belt cutter readily accessible," he said.

"Fortunately the driver was okay apart from some bruising from the air bags and expectedly shaken."

Meanwhile 137 customers were effected due to the power pole being significantly damaged, Ergon Energy corporate communications manager said.

Crews had to bring in additional equipment and a power pole, he said.
