Mundubbera set for a big weekend

AFTER the town was battered by the recent floods, Mundubbera Cricket Association officials are hoping the weather gods smile on them with their 27th annual Seven-a-Side Carnival scheduled for this Sunday.

Association secretary/treasurer Colleen Whelan said for a while it looked like their secondary venue, Scampers Grounds, would not be ready in time for the carnival after being inundated by flood water.

But the whole community rallied in the clean-up of the many badly affected areas, and it is all systems go for both those fields and Archer Park, where all finals will be played under lights.

A total of $5000 prizemoney is on offer including a rich $1750 for the overall men's winners who will also take home the Westpac Shield.

After the first round of games, men's teams are split into three sections, with the winners going into the Shield, the losers into the Plate and the “local more social teams” who have lost their first two games compete for the Saucer.

There is also a women's competition and for the first time, an over-40s men's division, while various other cash prizes are also up for grabs.

Festivities will kick off on Saturday with a meal at the Community Centre, followed by men's and women's sprint races with $200 prizemoney each, a Calcutta (selling of the teams) and entertainment.

Nominations close tonight with Whelan.
