UPDATE 12.40PM: A man seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash at Oakey remains in intensive care.

A spokeswoman for the PA Hospital in Brisbane said the 33-year-old Darling Heights man was in a critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit.

He was airlifted from the scene of the three-vehicle crash about 5.40pm after he was cut from the mangled wreck of a Ford Falcon sedan on the Warrego Hwy.

Three other people injured in the crash were taken to Toowoomba Hospital with comparatively minor injuries.

FRIDAY 7.45AM: A man remains in a critical condition in Brisbane after a multi-vehicle crash at Oakey yesterday afternoon.

The 33-year-old Darling Heights man was airlifted to the PA Hospital with critical head and internal injuries about 5.30pm.

Three other people with relatively minor injuries were taken to Toowoomba Hospital by road following the crash about 4pm at the intersection of Warrego Hwy and the Oakey turn-off.

Investigations are continuing into what caused the two cars and a prime mover to collide at the intersection.

Preliminary investigations suggest a Ford sedan was travelling east along the Oakey Toowoomba Rd merging onto the Warrego when it and the truck, headed east on the Warrego Hwy, collided.

The impact caused the car to cross the highway and collide with another vehicle.

The Warrego Hwy was shut for more than three hours as Forensic Crash Unit investigators scoured the scene.

It is understood police are investigating whether wet weather and speed were major contributing factors.

THURSDAY 6.40PM: A man was clinging to life after a horrific three-vehicle crash west of Toowoomba on Thursday afternoon.

The man, believed to be aged in his 30s, suffered life-threatening head and chest injuries and is being airlifted from the crash scene on the Warrego Hwy at Oakey.

It is understood the man was the driver of a grey Ford Falcon sedan and had to be freed from the wreckage.

His passenger is believed to have sustained minor injuries and was taken to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition by road.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing but it is believed speed and wet weather were contributing factors.

5.40PM: A Queensland Ambulance spokesman said one man remained in a critical condition at the scene.

He said advanced care paramedics were working to stabilise the man in the ambulance before he is airlifted, believed to be to Brisbane.

The spokesman described his injuries as "critical".

Three other people have been taken to hospital by road for treatment of minor injuries.

One person suffered a minor facial injury, another sustained chest pain and a third was treated for an arm injury, the spokesman said.

5.25PM: Queensland Fire and Emergency Services captain Rodney Mason said luck was on the side of those involved in a horro crash between a truck and two cars this afternoon.

"The people are extremely lucky having been involved in an accident of this sort," he said.

"(There was) extensive of damage to all vehicles and I'd say it's just lucky they're in modern vehicles and the protection within the vehicle is probably what's helped a lot of people.

"Look, without knowing what's caused the incident, I couldn't comment on it, but with wet weather around if everyone could drive to the conditions and be extremely careful."

5PM: Emergency services have freed a man from the wreckage of a crash involving a truck and two vehicles near Toowoomba on the Warrego Hwy.

The man will be airlifted to hospital in the Rescue 500 helicopter with critical injuries.

The crash occurred about 4pm near the intersection of the Warrego Hwy and Old Toowoomba Rd.

One ute is severely damaged on its right side and the prime mover is blocking the west bound lanes. It has no trailers.

 4.40PM: Firefighters have used hydraulic cutting equipment to free a man from the wreckage of a crash involving a truck and two cars on the Warrego Hwy.

The man will be airlifted to hospital in the Rescue 500 helicopter with critical injuries.

Three other people have been injured in the crash and are being treated at the scene by Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics.

The truck driver will taken to Toowoomba Hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

The Warrego Hwy has been closed in both directions at Zimms Corner with traffic diverted down Kingsthorpe-Haden Rd.

4.15PM: A man is trapped in the wreckage of a crash between a prime mover and two cars just west of Toowoomba on the Warrego Hwy.

Emergency services were called to the intersection at the intersection of Toowoomba Rd and the Warrego Hwy near Oakey.

Multiple Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Queensland Ambulance Service crews are responding from Toowoomba and surrounding centres.

Police are arriving on scene.

The Warrego Hwy has not officially been closed at this stage but motorists are urged to avoid the area.

4.05PM: Emergency services are responding to a three-vehicle crash west of Toowoomba this afternoon involving two cars and a large prime mover.

One person is reportedly trapped in one of the vehicles at the cross of Toowoomba Rd and the Warrego Hwy at Oakey.

Multiple Queensland Ambulance paramedics are en route to the incident.
