Miner’s wife feels the worry of the future
MINING wife and mother of five Victoria Murray knows all too well the stress being felt by families worried about the future during the resources downturn.
Mrs Murray, who runs a support group for Yeppoon women who take full responsibility for families and households while their partners are working in the mines, said everybody she was talking to was feeling unstable.
"Some women are putting off renovations or buying a new property but then there are those - particularly contractors - wondering if they will have a job next week," she said.
Her own husband was recently let go from a position he held in Tieri but was fortunate enough to find work again.
"It's unsettling," she said. "I just try to make sure the children aren't aware. I try to keep them from hearing what is going on."
Mrs Murray said every time she heard about more job cuts her heart sank, wondering if they would be the next to be affected.
