Mine is welcome: mayor

THE massive iron ore deposit near Mundubbera could be a blessing for the town, according to North Burnett mayor Joy Jensen.

“I would welcome it, and I’m sure that the people of Mundubbera would appreciate the potential for a mine,” Cr Jensen said.

However, because the exploration is still in its early stages, she said no formal approach had been made by Eastern Iron Limited to the council for permits.

“Mining development is notoriously a slow process, but I will look forward to meeting with the company,” Cr Jensen said.

“It’s good to know the potential is out there in the North Burnett, and it’s much appreciated by our communities if mines like this can go ahead.”

But she warned mining prospects in the region could be held up if railways were not upgraded.

“We’re lobbying every chance we get, because that upgrade is necessary,” she said.
