Rob Messenger wants answers

MEMBER for Burnett Rob Messenger demanded answers from Health Minister Paul Lucas on the recent dental equipment sterilisation bungle in a question on notice in parliament yesterday.

Mr Messenger said, during a meeting on November 18, Bundaberg Hospital oral health director Mike Charles could not guarantee the blunder had not been caused by human error and the sterilisation machine had not been tested.

But when he visited the Bundaberg Hospital last Friday, Mr Lucas told reporters the machine had been tested and the error had been caused because staff had not checked the tags on the instruments after sterilisation.

“The equipment on it only changes colour, the tag, when it has gone through the autoclaving procedure. If it didn’t work the tag wouldn’t have changed and someone would have looked at it,” Mr Lucas said.

Investigations into how the mistake occurred continue.

In his question on notice, Mr Messenger also called for the minister to detail how he planned to shorten the seven-and-a-half year wait experienced at the Bundaberg Hospital Dental Clinic.
