Memorial Pool to close for council upgrades

MACKAY'S popular Memorial Pool will be one of four swimming facilities across the region to receive an upgrade over the winter period.

The CBD aquatic facility, which has been at the centre of much debate in recent months due to fears it would be permanently closed, will close from May 1 to June 1 for upgrades.

Mackay Region councillor Ross Gee said the council had a detailed maintenance list for Memorial Pool that would be worked through over the closure.

"Memorial is getting a new heating unit, we are repainting the 50m pool shell and concourse, and we are inspecting and fixing tiles throughout the facility," he said.

"The bathrooms and amenities are also scheduled for repairs and an aesthetic upgrade."

Bluewater Lagoon and Pioneer Swim Centres have also been earmarked for maintenance, with Pioneer to be fitted with heating system.

"This will give swimmers north of the river an attractive option over the cooler months," Cr Gee said.

While the new aquatic centre at the Mackay ARC will remain open throughout winter, all other pools will close for set periods.
