Memorial meet, missing a mate

PASSIONATE members of the Bundaberg Dragons Abreast Club will flex their muscles for a good cause next month.

The club is holding a sponsored paddle from their Strathdee Avenue club to the Rowers Club in memory of their founding member Anne Holmes who recently passed away.

Club member Carolyn Bagshaw has been a member of the club for more than a year, first in Darwin and then when she moved to Bundaberg.

“I love the friendship, the team spirit and the good exercise,” said Mrs Bagshaw who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002.

“I was lucky with my breast cancer but some people aren't.”

Mrs Bagshaw said Anne Holmes would be greatly missed at the Bundaberg club.

“She was such a lovely lady,” said Mrs Bagshaw.

“She got secondary cancer and she was gone before we knew it.”

The memorial paddle will take place on Sunday, October 11 from 8am.

Members will hold a flowers-on-the-water ceremony at the Rowers Club after the paddle in memory of Ms Holmes and other victims of the disease.

The death of a much-loved member has bonded the group.

“It has brought all of the members closer together,” Mrs Bagshaw said.

“I just feel proud that I knew Anne, we met this year and became fast friends.”

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in Australia, with one in nine women expected to be diagnosed by the age of 85.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation holds Breast Cancer Month in October to raise funds for research for prevention and cure.

Bundaberg Dragons Abreast Club is always looking for new members to join their group which paddles on most Sunday mornings.

Mrs Bagshaw encourages anyone who is interested in joining to come along and experience the fun that is dragon-boating.

“Paddling has been great for me, it's so peaceful and beautiful,” she said.

“People can start at any age, lots of people in their 60s and 70s and end up at elite levels competing overseas.”
