OPINION: Medical centre idea has merit

DO YOU know what the Sunshine Coast's biggest industry is?

It's not tourism, hospitality or retail. It's the health, medical and wellbeing sector.

It's a high growth area and one suited for our region, given its ageing population and sought-after lifestyle.

Therefore, the plans for a multi-purpose medical centre we've revealed on today's front page appear to make a lot of sense.

While the actual specifics may need reworking, the concept of being able to have medical services and accommodation in the same complex is sound.

Combine this with retail stores, hospitality venues and Bargara on your door step and I can imagine worse medical experiences.

It could also be a blueprint for a future medical tourism industry in Bundy.

What will be interesting to note is the reaction to the proposal.

The complex would be vastly different compared with the two motels currently occupying the sites.

But the derelict Palms Motel has one of Bargara's best locations and people will have to come to terms with the fact it needs to be completely redeveloped.
