Cancer Council concerned over Macca's delivery in Bundy

THREE months after McDonald's controversially began a home delivery service in Hervey Bay, Bundaberg is now on the menu.

From next Wednesday, Bundaberg residents will be able to order a Big Mac from the comfort of their home and have it delivered to their door.

Two restaurants in the region - Bundaberg City and Bundaberg West - will offer the service and deliver to surrounding suburbs with a minimum order of $25 in place.

The service is being rolled out across a number of restaurants in Queensland with an expected 35 to 40 restaurants to be offering delivery services by February next year.

When the NewsMail broke the news on its Facebook page on Thursday night, the post became a hot topic for discussion and at last count had received about 190 comments and 126 shares.

McDonald's drew criticism from health organisations when the service expanded to Hervey Bay earlier this year and Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift said this latest foray into Bundaberg would undermine current initiatives to improve community health.

"The likely consequence will be an increasing need for tax-payer funding to be used in treating costs of obesity and overweight and greater public spending on anti-obesity campaigns," she said.

"While French fries might be delivered cheap to your door, added costs will weigh up heavily."

But a McDonald's spokesman said feedback from customers, regarding the Hervey Bay trial, had been positive and in bringing the service to Bundaberg it was simply responding to local demand.

"Since Macca's delivery started in other markets, people have been asking to come to other areas of Queensland," he said.

Once it is operating, the delivery service will be available from Sunday to Thursday (5pm-9pm) and Friday and Saturday (5pm-10pm).
