IT WAS electoral return officer Maurie Wilson's final shake of the ballot box yesterday morning as he flicked open those little envelopes to announce: the ballot for this year's Bundaberg Regional Council election was drawn.

Four out of five mayoral candidates joined a crowd of around 40 nominees and supporters at the office on Quay St yesterday morning, with only Reid Schirmer a no-show.

Jack Dempsey scored the number one spot on the mayoral ballot and was gracious about his position. He was followed by Schirmer at number two, Peter Wyatt in three, Elise Cottam in four and Troy Madle in five.

"I wish everyone the best, not just for them but their families as well. Everyone, no matter what the result, learns from their experiences," Mr Dempsey said.

"I'm very excited, looking forward to the challenge. There's four and a half weeks to go and I'll be really pushing hard to get over the line, if I get the opportunity to lead the Bundaberg region."

Equally humble was Troy Madle, who remained determined and confident despite drawing the short straw.

"It was a 57km drive and I didn't know what it will be but as mum says, que sera sera, whatever will be will be - I'll cop it on the chin," Mr Madle said.

"I drew last but I'm confident that's not how the election is going to run."

Number four, Elise Cottam, said she was "absolutely excited" about the campaign.

ELISE COTTAM: It's going to be an exciting race.

"I got number four, so Four For Elise. It's fantastic," Ms Cottam said.

"It should be an exciting campaign, it should be equal and fair, and the people of this region now have a choice - and the choice is theirs."

Dark horse Peter Wyatt registered at the last minute on Tuesday night and displayed a larrikin streak.

PETER WYATT: Three is my lucky number.

"I've drawn number three - and guess what my lucky number is? Number three," Mr Wyatt said.

"So I couldn't ask for anything better. I'm really happy with number three.

"It's a shame Jack Dempsey's got number one but oh well, he's got to live with that."

Maurie Wilson, who has received an OAM for his contributions to the community including his years of service to the Scouting movement, was busily noting the ballots for each council division yesterday.

Stay tuned for a full run-down from the NewsMail later today.
