Masters' golden outing

A TOTAL of 22 gold medals were collected by Rum City’s masters swimming crew in Rockhampton last week.

Not surprisingly, they took home the Dinkum Aussi Shield for the most aggregate points as a result.

Bruce Lovett continued his form from the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago, winning five from five events.

Cherry Gaffel equalled Lovett’s effort, while Tracy Dunn managed four gold and one silver.

Lexie Towner’s tally of three gold and one silver was nothing to be scoffed at, while Daph Soppa’s return to the pool was nothing short of emphatic.

Soppa also claimed five wins in her five events, after not swimming competitively for more than six months.

“The times we swam were quite good considering we are still in heavy training and won’t start to taper for another three weeks,” Soppa said.

“We are all focused on the Queensland Short Course Titles in Cairns on March 12-14.”

Soppa praised Dunn’s effort in the breaststroke, where she improved her previous personal best by three seconds.

“Cherry Gaffell also swam within herself and looks good for the meet in Cairns,” Soppa said.
