Mario makes appearance when driver plays Nintendo at 90kmh

SUNSHINE Coast police thought they had seen it all- until they spotted a driver playing a Nintendo while driving.

Sunshine Coast Road Policing Unit Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho said he had seen many things during his 28 years experience, but he described this call out as weird and downright strange.

Police say on June 16 they spotted a male driver of a Mitsubishi sedan continually looking down and paying more attention to his right hand than the Nambour Connection Road he was travelling on at about 90kmh.

Police intercepted the vehicle and found the driver's mobile phone had its WiFi enacted and a Nintendo DS player had a game playing.

The 33-year-old Buderim man will appear in the Nambour Magistrates Court on Thursday July 2 charged with driving without due care and attention.

Here are the statistics from the 29 traffic operations conducted over those four days:

  • 3        Seat Belt Offences
  • 9        Drug Drivers caught
  • 9        Drink Drivers caught
  • 1305 Random Breath Tests conducted
  • 68      Speeding offences
  • 11      People caught driving using their mobile phone
