Manchester United closes gap on Premier League leaders
FOOTBALL: Manchester United survived a late scare to move to within five points of English Premier League leaders Manchester City with a 4-2 win at Watford.
England international Ashley Young turned on the style against his former club with a goal-scoring double inside the first 25 minutes.
He opened the scoring in the 19th minute when he lashed home a low shot from outside the box and then six minutes later he curled home a superb free-kick.
A third from Anthony Martial looked to have ended the Round 14 match as a contest but Watford gave themselves hope through a Troy Deeney penalty and a second from Abdoulaye Doucoure.
But United sealed the win with a brilliant solo goal from Jesse Lingaard four minutes from time.
Elsewhere, Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan was Brighton's star in a goalless draw against bottom club Crystal Palace.
Ryan pulled off a superb early double save to deny Christian Benteke and Wilfred Zaha.
In other games, Leicester downed Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 and Newcastle hit back from two goals down to grab a 2-2 draw at West Brom.
