Man will face 61 child sex charges

A BUNDABERG man will face trial after being charged with 61 sex offences against eight children in a seven-year period.

The 63-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced Bundaberg Magistrates Court yesterday on 44 child sex charges including unlawful dealing, deprivation of liberty, rape, threats, and exposing a child to an indecent film.

The charges relate to alleged offences against several children that were committed between December 2000 and May 2001 in Burnett Heads, and in Bundaberg in October 2001 and June to September 2007.

Defence lawyer Thomas Bray applied to have the committal hand-up hearing heard in a closed court, but Magistrate John Smith denied his request.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Robyn Shapcott gave 23 witness statements as evidence to Magistrate Smith.

Another 17 charges had already been committed to trial in the Bundaberg District Court, bringing the number of charges the 63-year-old will face to 61 alleged offences against eight children.

The man faced the court in prison-issue tracksuit pants, with his shoulders hunched over his handcuffs.

The accused did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody.
