Man who 'tongued-kissed' girl, 6, escapes jail

A  FAR Northern man, who drunkenly tongue-kissed a six-year-old girl, has had his jail term immediately suspended.

The incident happened on Murray Island, in the Torres Strait Islands, on October 29 last year. Ronald Ray Passi had been at a volleyball competition.

He grabbed the child, who was nearby, twice kissing her.

When he was told about his behaviour the next day, Passi went to police and told officers what had happened.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent treatment of a child.

Defence barrister Michael Dalton said there were exceptional circumstances and his clients should not spend actual time in jail.

The 44-year-old, who was a qualified electrician and fridge mechanic, had been working as a labourer at the time.

He had recently had heart surgery and was enrolled in a higher education diploma while he wasn't working with plans to study aquaculture.

Mr Dalton said his client was "aghast" at his offending.

Judge Brad Farr SC said Passi's intoxication was no excuse for his actions but agreed that there were exceptional circumstances.

The six-month jail term was suspended for 12 months.
