Massive fine for alcohol theft

A MAN who tried to punch a publican and disrupted police who were trying to help an unconscious person has been slapped with a $2300 fine.

Adam James Carr appeared in custody at the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Monday.

He was charged with committing public nuisance within a licenced premises, stealing after a previous conviction and three counts of failing to appear.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Tina Bland said Carr had stolen a bottle of Wild Turkey from Dan Murphy's valued at $49.99.

He placed the bottle down his pants and left the store.

Sen Const Bland said at another date, police had been called to the Railway Hotel with reports of an unconscious person in the car park.

They saw Carr shouting at the publican before trying to punch them.

"Police arrested him and he continued to yell profanities," Sen const Bland said.

When officers searched the man, they found .2 grams of marijuana hanging around his neck.

Sen Const Bland said the event was a disruption to police who were "trying to assist an unconscious person at the time" in the car park of the licenced venue.

Defence lawyer Ryan Dwyer said his client last worked in 2001 and was currently on a disability support pension.

Mr Dwyer said Carr was on the methadone program after a 10-year heroin addiction.

The court heard Carr had also failed to appear in court which were supposed to be heard on March 8, March 25 and April 12.

Magistrate Ross Woodford noted Carr's history, and sentenced him to three months imprisonment, wholly suspended for 12 months.
