Teenager airlifted off island with hook stuck in back

THE RACQ CareFlight Bundaberg rescue helicopter has flown to Fraser Island after a teenager injured himself while learning how to cast a fishing line with a shark hook.

Both the patient and a friend from the Sunshine Coast had been attempting to cast a line with a 10 cm shark hook attached when he aborted the cast and the hook lodged into his back.

CareFlight flew to the island on Sunday afternoon.

The local Ambulance officer treated the teenager and bandaged the injury leaving the hook in his back, awaiting the arrival of the rescue helicopter.

He was then airlifted to Hervey Bay Hospital in a stable condition where doctors worked to remove the hook.
