Man dead, teen fighting for life after Bruce Hwy crash

A MAN has been killed and a teenage boy is fighting for his life after a single-vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway north of Bluewater last night.

A 39-year-old man died when the four-wheel-drive vehicle, which was carrying five people, rolled near Sleeper Log Creek, about 2km north of Bluewater about 5.25pm.

Police said in a statement last night that the man, a front-seat passenger in the northbound vehicle, had been pronounced dead at the scene.

A 14-year-old male passenger was flown to Townsville Hospital by emergency helicopter "suffering from life-threatening injuries".

The boy remained in hospital in a critical but stable condition late last night.

Townsville District Duty Officer Darren Randall said the driver of a vehicle, a 24-year-old man, and two other passengers, boys aged 11 and 15 had been taken to Townsville Hospital for observation.

Both lanes of the highway were closed for about four hours before reopening to traffic late last night.

Police Forensic Crash Unit officers are investigating.

"Investigators are appealing for any witnesses to the crash or for anyone who has dash cam footage of the incident to contact police," a police spokesman said.

The tragedy occurred on a stretch of road notorious as being one of Townsville deadliest black spots.

The Townsville Bulletin reported in April that analysis of government crash data revealed eight people had died on the Bruce Highway between Bluewater and Toomulla from 2001 to 2016.

In June last year, a 46-year-old Cairns man died and another man was hospitalised in a crash north of Toomulla Beach Rd.

Last September, a 38-year-old Kennedy woman died when she was struck on the highway at Bluewater.

Earlier yesterday a child, believed to be a toddler, was also killed in a fatal crash west of Brisbane. The child was struck by a car at Blenheim, south of Gatton in the Lockyer Valley, about 4.20pm. Paramedics confirmed the child had died, with police inquiries suggesting the incident occurred on a driveway.

A 70-year-old man was also killed yesterday after the car he was driving collided with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction at Forestdale in Logan about 1.45pm.

Any witnesses or anyone with information about last night's Bluewater crash should call Policelink on 131 444.
