Man held on rape, assault charges

A MAN has been kept in custody after being charged with the repeated rape, assault and torture of a woman in Toowoomba.

The 25-year-old man is charged with three counts of rape, torture, deprivation of liberty, assault occasioning bodily harm, and attempted robbery.

A 31-year-old woman was the victim of a sustained attack at a Toowoomba residence on Thursday evening and Friday morning.

Toowoomba police Criminal Investigation Branch officer-in-charge Paul McCusker said police arrested and charged the offender on Friday.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment.

The man was held in custody and appeared in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Saturday.

He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to reappear in court on Monday October 17.

Detective Senior Sergeant McCusker said the pair knew each other.

It is believed the victim was a former girlfriend of the offender.

Police would not release details about the offences or what was involved in the torture.
