Man in court for money theft

A MAN who stole about $5000 from the Bundaberg Touch Association and the Bundaberg Junior Touch Association appeared in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Friday.

Frederick Hallagan, 63, of Sharon, was taken to the Maryborough Correctional Centre after pleading guilty to two charges of failing to appear in court and two charges of stealing as a servant.

Hallagan failed to appear at Bundaberg Magistrates Court on June 28 for a mention and failed to appear again on September 28 for sentencing.

Defence lawyer Christine Delaney told the court that Hallagan had failed to appear in June as he had temporarily moved to western Queensland to help with his asbestosis and had not received letters from Legal Aid. Ms Delaney said Hallagan had failed to appear in September as he had got the dates mixed up.

On both occasions he had contacted police as soon as he realised his error.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Barry Stevens said he did not have confidence Hallagan would front court at the next sentencing date.

Magistrate Neil Lavaring sentenced Hallagan to 14 days in prison for failing to appear.

Hallagan will be sentenced for the stealing charge on October 14.
