Man charged after deadly Qld rampage through mourners

A 55-YEAR-OLD man is facing a murder charge after allegedly driving a car into a home in Queensland where a large number of mourners had gathered.

The Cairns Post reported the grieving partner of a cancer victim allegedly reversed a four-wheel-drive vehicle before accelerating through the Kowanyama home where family and friends had gathered to mourn the woman's death.

Gary Hudson, 55, allegedly used a council vehicle to plough through the group of mourners about 10.30am on Friday.

A 48-year-old woman was pronounced deceased at the scene as a result of the incident and at least twelve other people were seriously injured, police said on Saturday.

A number of other people also sustained minor injuries.

A 55-year-old Kowanyama man  is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court today.

News Corp reported that Delanne Zingle was killed at the scene.

The paper reported the house partially collapsed, trapping people inside, after the vehicle crashed through the entire building, pulling down power lines and cutting power to parts of the small western Cape York community.

"People were literally crawling out from the rubble," one resident said.

Former Young Australian of the Year and Kowanyama local, Tania Major, told the ABC her mother was at the funeral which was for her cousin.

Ms Major said her mother was in the toilet at the time.

"She just said to me 'Tania, Kowanyama is in chaos and turmoil. It's going to be another world war three zone'," Ms Major said.

The Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service activated its disaster management plan to respond.

A Royal Flying Doctor Service plane with two doctors and four nurses was also flown in to provide additional support.
