Man, 34, pleads guilty to downloading child porn images

A 34-YEAR-OLD Bundaberg man who downloaded more than 3500 child pornography images has pleaded guilty to one count of using a carriage service for child pornography material and one count of knowingly possessing child exploitation material.

Craig Ashley Dimes appeared in the Bundaberg District Court yesterday after downloading the material late last year.

Crown Prosecutor William Ness told the court that on December 11, 2013, police executed a search warrant following investigations into child pornography being shared via file sharing program Shareaza.

He said that on November 27, 2013, investigations into a particular user sharing material of this nature revealed an IP address from a computer at the offender's home.

Mr Ness said during the search police found a laptop computer with a downloaded zip folder containing 3781 images and seven videos, which ranged from category one to category six (the most serious).

He said a small number of images were of toddlers and boys but the majority were of prepubescent girls aged between seven and 12 years.

Defence barrister Craig Ryan told the court Dimes was subjected to bullying and was raped by older boys as a child and while he never complained or sought help, the treatment had significantly affected his life.

Mr Ryan said his client had not seen all the images and was shocked when police told him there were around 4000.

He said Dimes was remorseful and ashamed of his behaviour and the shame it had caused his family.
