NBN outage hits Optus internet users

A MAJOR internet outage on the National Broadband Network has affected Optus customers across Australia.

The telecommunications company reported outages in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Optus blamed the outage on a "technical issue," which began yesterday afternoon and continued into the late evening.

Optus users took to Twitter to report problems on their NBN home service while up to 1000 complaints were logged by an internet outage site by 7pm (AEDT).

In a statement, Optus said it was working to fix the outage as soon as possible.

"Optus is working to restore NBN services to customers in the Northern Territory, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania," the statement said.

"We apologise to customers affected by this outage and thank them for their patience."

It's just the latest incident for the NBN, which has been hit with setbacks, delays, and numerous complaints, but the company maintains the rollout will be completed by 2020.

Complaints about the network, however, have risen, a telecommunications ombudsman report found.
