Lucky possum escapes python that ate its mother

LITTLE Georgie is one lucky possum, plucked from the jaws of death by a couple watching a python eat his mum.

Wildcare Australia's Cathy Cope said a couple had spotted the snake eating Georgie's mum, a common brushtail near Burpengary on January 7.

As the snake crushed his mum, her pouch went slack and out popped Georgie.

Rather than wait for him to become dessert, they grabbed the baby possum, wrapped him in a towel and called the Wildcare Australia helpline.

"It's horrible, it's fascinating but it's nature," Mrs Cope said on the snake making a meal of the parent.

"As mum died, her muscles relaxed and out popped Georgie."

Georgie was rushed to the zoo for a check up but "nothing was broken, just one puncture wound to his chest", Mrs Cope said.

She said the little possum was recovering well with a course of antibiotics, and had grown from 210g when he was brought in to 283g.

Georgie's new home includes a fake pouch but he is beginning to leave it and explore.

He will gradually be weened off human contact, ready to release when he's about 1.2kg.

Anyone finding a native animal in distress can phone Wildcare Australia's 24-hour helpline on 5527 2444.
