Lucky escape after smash

A DRIVER escaped serious injury after colliding with a semi-trailer at the intersection of the Ring Road and Elliott Heads Road yesterday morning.

The man was travelling on Elliott Heads Road towards Bundaberg when the crash happened, about 11.20am.

The crash left the passenger-side door of the man's Kia sedan a mangled mess and he suffered minor injuries from the impact.

He was taken to Bundaberg Hospital by Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics.

It is believed the car's driver ran a red light.

The truck's driver, Geoff Bennett, said the motorist was lucky to have avoided serious injury.

“He must have just missed the tray truck, which was coming the other way, and then he got me with enough force to put me into the other lane,” Mr Bennett said.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue crew attended the accident to clean up a minor oil spill on the road.

“Both drivers were very fortunate as the crash had the potential to be a lot worse,” station officer Vicki Shailer said.

Bundaberg Police Sergeant Michael Prickett said both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

Police investigations are continuing.
