Loo peeper was guilty

A FORMER Bundaberg school teacher has escaped being sent to jail after a jury found him guilty of masturbating in a public toilet while watching a teenager in the next cubicle.

Lloyd Vincent Appo, 57, of Sharon, was a primary school teacher for more than 30 years until May last year when he was charged with committing an indecent act and making an observation in breach of privacy.

During this week's three-day trial, a teenager who worked in a fast-food outlet at Hinkler Central told of how he had gone to the bathroom on May 10.

The 18-year-old gave evidence that he had been in the toilet for about eight minutes when he heard a scuffling noise and looked up to find Appo leaning over the top of his cubicle, wearing no pants and masturbating.

When the teenager was cross-examined, the defence put to him that it had actually been he who was masturbating in the bathroom.

Appo claimed a slapping sound led him to believe the person in the next cubicle was doing intravenous drugs so he climbed on to the ledge to get a description to give to security officers.

Prosecutor John Copley said the allegation the teen was masturbating was a “gross insult and a gross embarrassment”.

“He's a man of very mature age – he must have well known the scandalous and insulting nature of his conduct,” Mr Copley said.

Appo was sentenced to a 12-month intensive corrections order, which will see him report to correctional services twice a week and undergo counselling.

“You are a retired teacher who has held responsible positions and who has been respected in the community,” Judge Leanne Clare said.

“It is upsetting to a person such as this standing in the dock on charges such as these.”
