RESIDENTS have been evacuated from one home that was under threat from the large grass fire burning near Sarina.

A rural fire brigade spokesman says he believes crews will have to work through the night to try and contain the blaze, protecting other homes and property from the fire.

It is believed some residents working in Mackay were forced to return home to prepare their properties and move animals to safer ground.

Earlier, the Daily Mercury reported up to a dozen fire crews were working to contain the blaze near Courtneys Gap Rd and Les Pitcher Rd, south of Sarina.

Earlier this afternoon Queensland Fire and Rescue issued a bushfire advice which stated:

"As at 3.45pm a large, fast moving grass fire is burning near Courtneys Gap Road and Les Pitcher Road, Sarina (south of Mackay).

"Currently, 10 fire crews are working to contain the blaze, which broke out around 11am. Crews will be conducting back burning operations and will remain on scene overnight. There is no threat to homes at this time."

Residents in the Colston Park and East Funnel Creek areas should consider taking precautionary measures including:

  • Putting on protective clothing;
  • Drinking lots of water;
  • Moving car/s to a safe location;
  • Closing windows and doors and shutting blinds;
  • Bringing pets inside, restraining them (leash, cage or secure room) and providing water;
  • Wetting down fine fuels close to buildings;
  • Removing garden furniture, doormats and other items;
  • Sealing all gaps under doors and screens;
  • Filling containers with water - eg bath, sinks, buckets, wheelie bins;
  • Having ladders ready for roof space access (inside) and against roof (outside);
  • Having a generator or petrol powered pump ready; and
  • Checking and patrolling outside for embers, extinguishing any spot fires and seeking shelter as the fire front arrives.

Residents are advised to call 000 if they believe their property comes under threat.
