Local boy named air cadet of the year

THE Australian Air League is a uniformed youth organisation for boys and girls from eight to 18 years which encourages an interest in aviation as a career or as a hobby for the youth of Australia.

It strives to promote good citizenship, leadership and teamwork - developing the skills and knowledge of its members.

Last week end Squadron Sergeant Tom Houghton and Corporal Caitlyn Chappell competed in the Queensland Girl and Boys Cadet of the Year.

The Non commission Officer camp was held in Hervey Bay with cadets from all over Queensland competing.

Nominees for cadet of the year were judged on the following criteria:

  • Presentation and Bearing
  • Knowledge of the Australian Air League
  • Knowledge of Current Affairs
  • Ability to discuss all matters
  • A 5 minute speech on a designated topic
  • AAL activities attended
  • Squadron attendance
  • Squadron OC's report and recommendation.
  • Candidate resume.

Mr Tom Houghton took out the boys Queensland's Cadet of the Year for boys.

He will go on to compete against other states in February in 2014.
