LNP pushes for more pollies for 'Queenslanders’ sake'

THE LNP is pushing for more state politicians for better representation for Queenslanders.

The proposal would provide the option for an independent redistribution commission to increase the number of State Parliament seats from 89 to 94 at most.

Opposition attorney-general spokesman Ian Walker said the body would have more flexibility to decide what was needed to adequately service regional and remote areas.

He said the growing population would only put more pressure on electorates, some of which were twice the size of Victoria.

The bill has the support of Katter's Australian Party MPs Shane Knuth from Dalrymple and Robbie Katter, whose Mt Isa electorate is one of the state's largest.

Mr Katter said he and Mr Knuth often paid $8000 to drive 5000km weekly to travel around their regions.

"I can't do an effective job as a member of parliament given the space I've got to carry now," Mr Katter said.

"Now is that fair on the electorate of Mt Isa or Dalrymple?"

Mr Knuth said rural and regional MPs were travelling further and further as electorates' populations grew.

The LNP said a commission, not politicians, should analyse whether more seats were needed.

"This was an important recommendation of the Electoral and Administrative Review Commission in 1990, borne out of the Fitzgerald Inquiry," Mr Walker said.

"As we approach the redistribution due before the next election we have to be sure that we get the best outcome for Queenslanders.

"Given the last review of seat numbers occurred nearly 30 years ago, and that since then the average number of electors in each seat has almost doubled, it may be wise to look at whether more seats need to be created."
