A LITTLE boy in a striped yellow top has won the hearts of first the Pope and and now the world.

At an event in the Vatican this week, Catholic families from around the world gathered to celebrate the Year of Faith with Pope Francis.

During the ceremony a little boy wandered onto the stage for a closer look at the Pope.

Instead of calling for security or brushing the boy aside, the pope welcomed him, gave him a hug and allowed him to sit in his chair.

The touching scene has warmed the hearts of many, offering a marked change of view from previous popes, who often appeared aloof.

Pope Francis continued the ceremony, in which he greeted people from 80 countries, as the boy looked on.
