LETTER: Top job from Tomato Backpackers owner
WHAT a great story, James Lee the owner developer of Tomato Backpackers has backed his belief in Bundaberg by putting up $2.5m to build yet another backpacker accommodation building here.
James is at the forefront of promoting tourism for our city and all of the financial benefits that his clients bring with them. James also provides first class facilities that were very nearly non existent in this accommodation industry prior to his arrival.
Backpackers are a very valuable asset to us all as they bring with them a certain amount of culture from their home country but most of all they have a tremendous work ethic that unfortunately a large percentage of our young homegrowns find impossible to obtain.
Without these young visitors most of our agriculture crops would lay rotting in the fields that grow them.
That is without taking into consideration the fact that they spend most of their earnings here and the boost that it gives to our economy.
All this begs the question, why would we jeopardise this important ingredient to our economy and well being, by letting our Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison impose this 30% income tax levy on these young people.
This has to be the most blatant discriminating tax ever conceived.
This is imposed on every dollar earned whereas everyone else has to earn $18,200 before any tax is applied.
Keith Pitt represents the government in our area and as such could be held responsible if this tax becomes reality.
So Keith stand up to the machine and get this nonsense stopped.
You are supposed to defend your electorate in the case of adversity so get on with it. If this tax becomes reality then it rests with you. The time has arrived for real statesmanship.
As for James Lee keep up the good work and all the success that comes with it.
