LeBron James speaks out on racism after graffiti attack

BASKETBALL: Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James has had to deal with a far more disturbing confrontation than anything the Golden State Warriors will serve up in game one of their NBA playoffs on Friday morning (AEST).

The four-time NBA MVP has spoken about the ongoing battle against racism in the United States after discovering a racial slur spray-painted on the front gate of his Los Angeles home.

"On the eve of one of the greatest events we have in sports, race and what's going on comes again," James said.

"It just goes to show that racism will always be part of the world, part of America, and that hate, especially for African-Americans, is living every day."

Fortunately his family were at their Ohio residence at the time.

"The most unfortunate part is that I can't be with my kids right now," James said. "It's kind of killing me.

"Hopefully I give them enough life skills that when they get ready to fly, they can fly on their own."

While his priorities remain very much on his family - "basketball comes second", he said - James will now try to put the unfortunate event aside and prepare for the Cavs' clash with the Warriors.

It is their third straight finals match-up, Cleveland winning 4-3 last season, Golden State 4-2 in 2015.

"I'll be focused tomorrow on the game, on all the games," James said.
