League greats to play Bundy game
Former Test and State of Origin greats Gary Larson, Jason Hetherington, Robbie O’Davis and Nathan Blacklock will head an all-star team to play in Bundaberg in February next year.
They will feature in a promotional match being organised by the Across The Waves Senior Rugby League Football Club at the ATW Sports Complex on February 26.
Club vice-president Rowan Gibbs said the four had already agreed to the match, but he was confident of assembling a full team of top former NRL players for what promises to be a great boost for the code.
He also said contact had been made with a list of other past champions through former Brisbane Broncos, Penrith Panthers and English Superleague star Sid Domic, who is one of their club junior coaches.
“We already have had a lot of interest from a number of other former Test and State of Origin heroes but they can’t be named until they commit,” Gibbs said.
“The idea is that we have two or three players from each of the Bundaberg clubs, and they and the legends will be mixed up and split in half to make two even sides for what promises to be a great match.”
Giibs said the game would be part of a whole weekend of events, starting with a dinner on Friday night featuring a guest speaker and memorabilia auction.
“On Saturday, the plan is for the players to join in a bowls day, then there will be about three junior games in the late afternoon leading into the main event,” he said.
“Make a Wish will be involved as well and players will do some fundraising for them before the game. It will also be a family day, including a jumping castle for the kids.
“The concept is the brainchild of club president Terry Cassidy and we hope to promote rugby league a bit and try to do it annually.”
Gibbs said anyone who would like to help with sponsorship of the weekend or who wants to get involved in other ways should phone Cassidy on 0434 149 182 or email him at email@example.com
