A Latin Affair: Twin volcanoes over 47,000 people

UNATTENDED horses stampeding along bessa block roads, chickens on suicide runs and pigs wandering aimlessly through front yards.

Women congregating in the shallow water of Lake Nicaragua to do the clothes washing of a morning.

Seasoned fishermen preparing their lines and nets on the rocks with young boys learning the trade at their side.

And men riding bicycles with bananas, or some other produce, piled so high it could be a balancing act in the circus.

These are all typical scenes on the tiny island of Ometepe.

But it's the twin volcanos that dominate the landscape above the 47,000 inhabitants.

Concepcion and Maderas are both difficult climbs - one is 10-12 hours and the other is eight hours through a muddy cloud forest.

But there is a three-hour round hike up Maderas which provides an awesome viewpoint of Concepcion and the bridging land between the two.

On the way from the mainland, a ferry load of silly tourists thought they saw a lava river on the larger of the two cones - with a few, no doubt cheeky, locals confirming the red glowing was such.

Don't look at me that way - you didn't see it.

Turns out we saw a bush fire start and then rip it's way up Concepcion.

The island is also known for growing coffee and it's possible to view the plantation.

Horses are everywhere on the island and available a ride along the beach or through the forest.

The highlight for me - a natural spring to refresh from the hot day.

Try not giggling while watching your friends try the Tarzan rope or the tight rope.
