Land to be acquired for North Bundy flood evacuation route

BUNDABERG Regional Council has resolved to acquire land for the construction of a flood levee at the Bundaberg Technology Park to provide a flood evacuation route for North Bundaberg residents.

Bundaberg Mayor Mal Forman said the council made the decision for compulsory acquisition of about 10,513m2 of land, or pursuant to an agreement with the land owner in a special meeting of the council on Monday, April 14.

"We have maintained that it would be impossible to flood-proof North Bundaberg from an event to the scale of the January 2013 floods but we can ensure those residents aren't left vulnerable and with no means of escape," Cr Forman said.

"What the flood levee will mean for residents is an enhanced evacuation route along Mt Perry Rd as well as additional resilience for property owners in the area."

The flood levee project will be jointly funded by the State Government and council.
