Labor's Jim Pearce blows up: 'We should be embarrassed'

OUTSPOKEN Labor backbencher Jim Pearce has slammed the Budget Estimates process as "a waste of time" because of the poor questioning from the Opposition and Dorothy Dixers from Government MPs.

During parliamentary debate over Budget Estimates, the Member for Mirani and chairman of the infrastructure, planning and natural resources committee slammed the way the proceedings were conducted this year.

"As an elected member we should all be embarrassed in the way some of these hearings went," he said.

"Estimates are about opportunity - opportunity to hold the Government to account for how they spend taxpayers dollars."

Mr Pearce said Opposition frontbenchers had "dudded taxpayers" with their poor questions which did not reveal how, where or why public funds had been spent.

He also said Dorothy Dixers - where MPs asked soft questions of those on their own side - were a waste of time because government ministers were "more than capable" of answering questions, especially since they had senior public servants to help with the answers.

Mr Pearce also called on Government backbenchers to do their own research and ask questions relevant to their electorates.
