Kohli into all-time top 10 of century makers

VIRAT Kohli is only 28 years old and he is already one of the top 10 century scorers in international cricket history.

Kohli moved past Sri Lankan great Sanath Jayasuriya on the ladder on Thursday when he reached triple figures against Bangladesh in Hyderabad.

The Indian gun now has 43 tons in international cricket, with 16 in Tests and 27 in one-day internationals.

Only nine men have scored more and they are all certified greats.

What's more, Kohli is the only player in the top 10 under 30. In fact, he's the only player younger than 30 in the top 50 century makers.

He has also played the equal fewest games of anyone in the top 10, tied with South Africa's Hashim Amla on 281.

Remarkably, Amla has hit six more centuries than Kohli in that time, though he has also batted in 41 more innings.

Considering the form he is in, Kohli is in with a chance - admittedly, a very long one - of joining the top five before the end of the year, with fifth-placed Mahela Jayawardene (54 centuries) 11 tons away. However, his hopes of joining the top five are hurt by the fact both Amla and AB de Villiers are still playing cricket.

Among batsmen who have played at least 10 matches in each international format, Kohli boasts the best average (52.61 across 281 matches).

Admittedly, this qualification rules out the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, who only played one T20 international, and Don Bradman, who retired long before one-day cricket came around.

Still, there is plenty of competition for the crown of cricket's most complete three-format players, with the next two men on the list genuine icons of the modern game.

South African all-rounder Kallis sits second (49.10 across 519 matches), with Australia's Mike Hussey third (49 across 302 matches).

Kohli's contemporaries Joe Root (48.95 across 157 matches) and Steve Smith (48.72 across 175 matches) round out the top five.

Kohli has now scored Test centuries against each of the seven nations he has played.

The only Test-playing countries he is yet to score a ton against are Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

Unfortunately, Kohli may never get the chance to complete the set due to political tensions between India and Pakistan, who have not faced each other in a Test since 2007.

Six of Kohli's centuries have come against Australia. He has scored three each against England and New Zealand, and one each against South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the West Indies.

Below are the top 10 century makes in international cricket.

Player - centuries - matches

Sachin Tendulkar - 100 - 664

Ricky Ponting - 71 - 560

Kumar Sangakkara - 63 - 594

Jacques Kallis - 62 - 519

Mahela Jayawardene - 54 - 652

Brian Lara - 53 - 430

Hashim Amla - 49 - 281

Rahul Dravid - 48 - 509

AB de Villiers - 45 - 388

Virat Kohli - 43 - 281
