Kicked unconscious in a CBD alley

A MACKAY man, 58, is recovering after a vicious mugging left him unconscious, bruised and alone at 2.45am in an alley.

Gavin Stephens said he ventured out into the city on Saturday night and had a few drinks at the CBD Hotel before making his way out onto the street to call a taxi.

Mr Stephens said two young men, who appeared to be in their 20s or younger, approached him across the road from the hotel and asked for a cigarette.

"I said that I'm a non-smoker and then they asked if I had any money," Mr Stephens said.

"I said, 'mate, not for you'.

"Then I was hit from behind. I fell to the ground and when I rolled over there were two more guys behind me."

He said the four young men proceeded to kick him until he was unconscious.

"I woke up saturated at around 2.45am, down an alley.

"They took my wallet and a file of cards from my pocket. There was about $100 in the wallet."

Mr Stephens said Mackay police contacted him on Sunday morning after they found the file wallet containing his bank cards.

"I couldn't really give them a description," he said.

"They told me they never find these people."

He said the attack left him with cuts and bruises to his head, behind his ears and on his body.

"I was really scared.

"I've got a young daughter, she's 20, and she and her boyfriend go out all the time.

"I'm not concerned about myself but I am concerned about my daughter."

Mr Stephens said since the murder of Shandee Blackburn he'd worried about his daughter's safety in Mackay's CBD.

"I've been here 30 years and I never would have guessed in a million years that I'd get mugged in Mackay. This is the first time I've been out on the town in two years."
