Rival’s error sure to give Reds food for thought

Casual rugby followers are often disappointed when they ask "Why are Kiwi sides so much better?" and you answer "their catch-and-pass skills, their basics."

Brumbies centre Tevita Kuridrani proved the point again last Friday night when he didn't pass when in the clear.

He's trimmer and more explosive than he's looked for years.

What use is that when a 58-Test figure can ignore two supports outside and blow a try by insisting on going into contact first?

The Queensland Reds face a big selection call on just that theme.

There's the hint that Samu Kerevi and Chris Feauai-Sautia will be paired in the centres against the Highlanders in Dunedin on Friday night.

It's the formation that was selected to start seven times last season and also in the major pre-season trial against the Chiefs.

They are inferior passers to Duncan Paia'aua and wing choice Jordan Petaia and the Reds' attack will be poorer if neither of the latter duo are in the centres on Friday night.

That's one for coach Brad Thorn because good selection is often as important as good coaching when it comes to winning games.

In saying that, Feauai-Sautia is looking svelte and captain Kerevi arrived back at pre-season training fitter than any of the squad's other Wallabies.

Both are big bodies and line-busters with direct methods to get the Reds going forward.

Bryce Hegarty will take a major role in his debut for the Reds after his recruitment from the NSW Waratahs.

The top choice for fullback will be the side's No.1 goalkicker and will need to offer some playmaking moments to take some of that load off young flyhalf Hamish Stewart.
