O'Dowd looks set to win Flynn

THE tense wait to see which candidate has passed the post in Flynn continues as Australian Electoral Office works to count postal votes.

With a small number of votes separating Member for Flynn Chris Trevor and LNP challenger Ken O'Dowd, neither candidate has conceded.

At last count yesterday afternoon, Mr O'Dowd was in front by 2655 votes and 52.24% of the two-candidate preferred vote.

Officers at the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) are expected to continue counting postal votes this morning and some pre-poll ballots later in the afternoon.

“They are plodding along,” AEC spokeswoman Caroline D'Allura said.

The AEC expects to know by the end of next week if a recount of ballots is needed — a situation that occurs automatically if there is a difference in under 10 votes.

During yesterday's count, the votes were trending towards Mr O'Dowd at about 60%.

“I just hope it keeps tracking like that,” he said.

“But you never know what tomorrow brings. There is still another six days of counting so a lot can happen over that time.”

The NewsMail tried to contact Mr Trevor yesterday afternoon, but was told by his office that he was “not contactable” for the evening.

The AEC's virtual tally room online has had Flynn listed as a win for the LNP.

But on election night, Mr Trevor said he would wait until all votes were counted before he made a call to concede.
