Kaufusi takes charge of BRL representative side
LEAGUE: Antonio Kaufusi is hoping that this year, pride can be brought back to the Bundaberg Rugby League A-Grade side.
The current The Waves coach was announced yesterday as the coach for the representative side that will play in the 47th Battalion carnival this year in Toowoomba in April.
Kaufusi replaces Dave Pearce who was coach for the past seven seasons.
In that time the QRL Central Division operations manager guided the side to two titles in 2011 and 2013.
Kaufusi now wants to end the drought in a job he's had his eye on for the past two years after coaching the under-20 team to the title last year.
"Last year I wanted to coach the the men's but Chippy was coach so I bided my time,” he said.
"I put in my application and got the job.
"I'm pretty excited and hopefully I can get the culture back into the team.”
Kaufusi said he wanted players that really want to play for the representative side.
"We've had years where players have pulled out late from the squad,” he said.
"I want that to change, I want players who want to represent the jersey.”
Kaufusi will do that by starting to prepare a squad before the BRL A-Grade season starts.
But he'll make sure room is set aside for those who impress in the opening few rounds.
Kaufusi said the team would be aiming to win.
"I'd be lying if I didn't say that was the ultimate goal,” he said.
"We'll be giving it a good shot but there will be no pressure on the boys.
"The only pressure will come from our preparation for the event.”
In other news, Glen Darby was named as women's coach with Alex Dreger and Paul Barritt to coach the under-18 and under-20 sides.
