John tells his tale of owning a hobby shop
WHEN you speak to John Davis, it is clear this is a man who is passionate about his business.
Trading for four years initially with Bundy Hobbies and Toys, John was happy to expand the store's range with the inclusion of Leading Edge Electronics.
Operating a store like this came naturally for John, who, like many other men, enjoyed tinkering and was always interested in how things worked and being able to make them better.
John said that when he and his wife first started the hobby shop there weren't any others operating in Bundaberg and had not been for more than a year.
"Our initial idea was to provide what we call a traditional hobby shop with most things able to be built from kit form such as hands-on plastic kits, RC plans that were able to be built from scratch with construction plans, trains and other building products and tools,” he said.
"It quickly became clear that this was going to be hard to achieve as importers and suppliers were not and are not today focused in that way and many of our customers were focused on products that they could plug in and play straight out of the box.
"I am proud that there isn't another retail outlet in the region with as large and diverse product range as we have in store and we always encourage anyone looking for a new hobby or electronic supplies to come in and see us.”
John supports many clubs in the region, highlighting that Bundaberg Aeromodellers and Bundaberg Aero Sports Flyers are good, family oriented clubs for the radio controlled flyer.
Bundaberg and Gin Gin RC Car Club is also an ideal club for the radio controlled car enthusiast.
By now having Leading Edge Electronics as part of the store, John and his team have access to a large buying group and a very diverse range of stock.
"We continue to be very interested in the DIY electronics, security and hobby range of products that we have been able to stock in the shop.
"This has given us a wider range of products to offer to the public.
"As with the hobby side of the shop our stock has been built up from customer interest and developed from there.
"This is an area that I have always continued to develop my knowledge in and have a wealth of knowledge around remote control toys and are happy to pass on this knowledge.
"We were also remodelling and setting up the shop to fit in Leading Edge Electronics when Dick Smiths announced closure, so we were not only able to pick up a lot of their shop fittings.
"But most importantly we were able to offer Ben and Steve, both of them long-term employees of Dick Smith, employment with us which has given us good electronic product knowledge.”
Some of the Bundy Hobbies and Toys/Leading Edge Electronics popular items include:
Minelab metal detectors which are available in the base range through to the upper level gold finders. These items are very popular for taking out and detecting hidden treasure
Telescopes - new to the range, are great for the budding astronomer and available in large and small sizes
A wide range of electronic bits and bobs
DIY solar panels and equipment for caravans as well as satellite and 12v televisions
A range of speakers, record players, sound systems, televisions and other household electronic items
Phone and data credit
"I am very excited about a future for the business within the Bundaberg region as it is an area that I believe in and enjoy calling home,” John said.
"With the store, as the demand grows we will be able to increase our product range and better serve the customers' needs with service, product and price.”
