Jail smoking law will light up debate
NEW State Government rules banning smoking in correctional facilities from May next year will no doubt draw some ire from many.
Criticism has already flared over the latest tough Queensland policy which will ban both prison workers and inmates from lighting up while on facility grounds.
However, groups such as the Cancer Council have come out in favour of the plan, which was leaked early after being accidentally uploaded to the government's Department of Corrections website.
With similar rules in the NSW and the Northern Territory, it's probably only a matter of time before Australia embraces this rule in all states.
All the State Government's tough laws have had people talking, and this latest one will bring debate on just what provisions prisoners should be entitled to.
Whether you believe prison should be about rehabilitation or about punishment, banning cigarettes addresses both categories - a leisure activity like smoking will no longer be provided, and the health of inmates will be improved.
What do you think of the new rule?

It's stupid, everyone should have a right to smoke if they want
I don't really have an opinion on the issue
I am against it
I'm definitely for it - prisoners shouldn't have leisure in jail
I'm for the new rule
I agree with the rule on the basis of health
