Is it a case of play again Sam in NRL?

IT'S the rumour that refuses to go away.

Despite denials from all directions, including from his English rugby club Bath, it seems Sam Burgess is headed back to rugby league next season.

Insiders insist the big forward wants out of rugby after copping a lot of the flak following England's failed World Cup campaign. The hosts failed to make it out of their Pool after losses to Australia and Wales, going into the history books as the first host nation not to reach the quarter-finals.

A review has already begun into the failure, with fingers pointed at coach Stuart Lancaster, in particular for his decision to select Burgess ahead of more seasoned players.

South Sydney is believed to be keen to regain Burgess for the 2016 NRL season, although cashed up Super League club Leeds Rhinos have entered the picture, with reports suggesting they have already approached the Englishman.

The Rabbitohs, who won their first premiership in 42 years on Burgess' broad shoulders in 2014, obviously want the damaging forward back at Redfern. The issues would be what arrangement the club could make with Bath, and how to fit him under their NRL salary cap given the money Leeds would be prepared to throw at him.

Burgess would most likely be keen to play in the NRL if he was to return to rugby league, and that would most likely be with Souths where his younger twin brothers George and Tom have just renewed contracts until 2018.

It is understood Burgess has already had talks with South Sydney about a possible return.
