Innovation drives success on big Gladstone projects
THE global success of mining projects such as those on Curtis Island is being driven by contractors striving for innovation, according to Thiess head Michael Wright.
Thiess has worked on QCLNG's upstream works and compression facilities, Awoonga High Dam and The Narrows marine crossing with GLNG amongst other contracts in Gladstone.
Mr Wright, Thiess' Australian mining business executive general manager, said the challenges facing the industry made it vital for everyone involved to keep evolving and challenging conventional mining practices and cost base.
"All good contractors understand that the mining industry is competitive, no matter what the cycle," he said.
"And we need to provide value to our clients, as the industry deals with the combination of low commodity prices, a high Australian dollar and the cost legacy of a mining boom."
He said in these difficult times, it was important to be clear and transparent about what it is businesses took to their clients, and how they could work together to strive for continued improvements and lower costs.
"Productivity and innovation are the key to ensuring that we deliver low-cost, sustainable mining solutions to the industry," he said.
"While we still have some way to go, we have made significant inroads into our efficiencies and costs, driving the unit costs down for clients, and providing ever increasing value."
Thiess was awarded a $134 million contract in 2012 by the Australian company of the worldwide pipeline specialist Saipem, to construct the tunnel for the Santos GLNG Project in Gladstone.
Thiess constructed the 4.3km tunnel under a section of water known as The Narrows to connect the mainland near Gladstone to the Santos GLNG LNG plant on Curtis Island.
The 3.4m internal diameter, segmentally lined tunnel will serve as the conduit for the Santos GLNG gas transmission line.
Thiess successfully tunnelled under The Narrows in February this year.
