IGA future in doubt
THE IGA store in the Bundaberg Plaza is more than likely going to close down soon.
Owner Kevin Cast denied last month that he planned to close the store.
But now he says that while it is not definite, the store will more than likely close.
Mr Cast said he had lost a large amount of money operating the store.
"I can't say it's closing at this stage," he said.
"By Tuesday I will know."
Mr Cast said he was still talking to the owner of the Bundaberg Plaza building, who he said had made him some offers in a bid to keep the store open.
He said there were eight permanent employees at the store who had all been offered jobs in other stores he owns
. Yesterday the store had signs offering 40% discounts on the items for sale.
The shelves were also largely empty.
The fate of the store has been a subject of speculation for some time, with an SMS to the NewsMail from someone claiming to be an employee, saying it was closing.
"Very sad and worrying for all of us staff, some have been here for 20-plus years," the SMS said.
An insider with knowledge of events in the store said all the staff had been offered jobs at the IGA in Moore Park Beach. "That's only a small store," she said.
"I'm not sure how they're going to accommodate anyone."
